Dubstep, the bass-heavy electronic music that evolved out of south London in the past decade, has become diffuse to the point where a prefix is required to describe its current incarnations. One of post-dubstep’s bright lights is Mount Kimbie, a London duo who delivered two promising EPs last year. Their debut album pushes the sound into lonely, fragmented places, but locates pockets of warmth. The haunted piano-wire of “Before I Move Off” is nicely offset by a strolling guitar riff and playful vocals. It may feel slight at times, but Crooks & Lovers leaves you wanting more.

Considering how ubiquitous his sound is right now, it may come as a surprise that ‘Forever You’ is L-Vis 1990’s first solo release proper in 2010. Granted, he’s a had a heap of killer remixes, but solo drops are subject to more lengthy controls and these five have made the grade. His knack for finding that balance of suited sophistication and gum-soled dirt is spread in varying degrees over the five tracks. While the lead cut is packed with big room potential, largely from the vocal and gleaming production values, ‘Into the Stars’ is rubbed with a dirtier bag of drums synched to bustling hip-house rap samples and ‘Do You Remember’ gives a wink to the late night dancers with grubby acid bass and direct driving rhythms. ‘Reprise’ meanwhile shoots for the lazers with surging trancey techno arpeggios offset with a rugged swingjack flavour, and then there’s a naked dub of the title track for the DJs. There’s no halfstepping with this gear, and in the most righteous sense of the word, it’s strictly for the dancers!

Hotflush Recordings proudly present the debut release from new London-based producer George FitzGerald. Part of the Man Make Music collective, George FitzGerald comes as the latest addition to the Hotflush Two roster. A perfect illustration of contemporary electronic production in a post-Hyph Mngo era, Fitzgerald continues the Hot Flush Two archetypal strand of dubstepnot- dubstep, referencing elements of Basic Channel-esque dub and ambience embedded into the jagged groove of modern UK garage. DJ support so far comes from Scuba, Joy Orbison and Appleblim.

Four years ago, you’d never in your life guess this peppy thing, however dark its tonality and precise its production, had come from Kode9 and the Spaceape. That’s how far dubstep has traveled. There’s something calm about this record that fits its position in between so many other tracks that Kode9 clearly tasked himself with making sound definitive. This is a corner piece, not a center one.
That doesn’t make it any less lovely. At about two minutes, we get the silvery synth wash. Fans will remember this device. The first time one of them announced itself to me—that sudden sheet of impenetrable gleaming sound that cut the track at a completely different angle than I was anticipating—was, of course, on a signal release by Kode9’s label Hyperdub, Rustie’s remix of Zomby’s “Spliff Dub,” and it nearly split my brain open. Kode9’s version of it is far finer, laser-like; it illuminates corners of the track more than it disrupts them. That it seems to announce itself as a variation on a theme, effective though it is, can’t help but say something about the way eruptions eventually settle themselves down.

Brand new for you on Loefah’s Swamp 81 label. Ramadanman brings the noise as only he can! You know the deal, funky wonky broken and with extra boom! Work Them is reminiscent of his recent DBridge remix and hits all the right places – early 80’s electro, Miami Bass subs and modern cut-up vocals comparative to Addison Groove. A similar concept is applied to Fall Short but this time high-pitched diva vocals echo early garage cuts. Big release for the right floors…

The Sbtrkt wagon rolls off another big ‘un, this time with XX-remixer Sampha for Ramp recordings. To be frank, that yelpy vocal in ‘Break Off’ is f**king annoying but the rhythm is too strong to really get us that p*ssed off. It sits somewhere between hi-tech funky and electro-house and is already doing the damage in the hands of Jackmaster and co. As the title suggests, ‘Evening Glow’ is more laidback number but still grooves heavy with clipped post garage beats and up-to-the-second synthlines organised with a refined melodic sensibility. A ‘Reprise’ follows sans beat, leaving the dynamic synthline to sweep from rich lows to piquant highs around the vocal snippets.

From Boomkat:
A second Smalltown Supersound album from Diskjokke, En Fin Tid (translated from Norwegian as “A Happy Time”) finds Joachim Dyrdahl making his first full-length since becoming a full-time musician. His debut, Staying In had been pieced together over a number of years, comprised from a number of tracks composed separately. This time around, the bigger picture of a proper album is Dyrdahl’s main focus, and clocking in at around an hour with only eight tracks, this is a hefty undertaking. Said to be influenced by “Holger Czukay’s mid 80s period, Brian Eno, Arthur Russell, European disco, Allan Parsons, Tangerine Dream, Arthur Lyman and Craig Leon” you can certainly hear the will to experiment in this Norwegian producer’s progged-up cosmic disco. Equally important is a sense of fun, and on the likes of ‘En Fin TId’ and ‘1987′ Dyrdahl rests his sights on danceable and highly melodic material. Standing out in particular is recent Moshi Moshi single, ‘Rosenrød’, which truly glistens at the heart of the album, adding wave after wave of creamy analogue synth to a rolling backbeat while fashioning the breeziest and most effectively minimal of melodies. Good stuff.
